Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) board is scheduled to meet on Monday to map the way forward on club sponsorship following Carlsberg Malawi’s recent announcement to sponsor both Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets for a season.
MTL marketing manager Wanangwa Thindwa confirmed that Carlsberg’s move had affected their plans on the sponsorship.
“The board is meeting on Monday and the issue will be tabled in the wake of the recent developments.
“Obviously, the move by Carlsberg [to take on board both Wanderers and Bullets] has had an effect on our plans because they were among the teams that submitted sponsorship bids,” said Thindwa.
Last week, MTL said the announcement of the team to be awarded the sponsorship had been delayed due to the devaluation of the kwacha.
“Devaluation has affected our budget as such we are revisiting the sponsorship to come up with new realistic figures,” he said.
Apart from Wanderers and Bullets, some of the teams that submitted their bids to MTL were Escom United and Blantyre United.
Until last year, MTL had been sponsoring Mighty Wanderers for 16 years.
