MTL seeks board’s guidance on sponsorship

Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) has said it will seek its board of directors’ guidance regarding sponsorship bids for football teams.

MTL’s marketing manager Wanangwa Thindwa on Saturday said the company’s board is expected to have its routine meetings on Monday and the company’s management will seek its guidance on the matter in the wake of Carlsberg Malawi’s recent announcement to sponsor both Mighty Wanderers and Big Bullets for a season.

“The board will be having its normal meeting on Monday and hopefully they will also advise us on how we should proceed,” said Thindwa.

Last week, Thindwa said Carlsberg’s move had an effect on their plans because both Bullets and Wanderers were some of the clubs that submitted bids.

“Obviously the move by Carlsberg to take on board both Wanderers and Bullets has had an effect on our plans because they were among the teams that submitted sponsorship bids,” said Thindwa.

Last week, MTL said the announcement of the team to be awarded the sponsorship had been delayed due to the devaluation of the kwacha.

“Devaluation has affected our budget. As such we are revisiting the sponsorship to come up with new realistic figures,” said Thindwa.

Apart from Wanderers and Bullets, some of the teams that submitted their bids were Escom United and Blantyre United.

Until last year, MTL were sponsoring the Nomads for a period spanning 16 years.
