She had been active in the music industry for the past 12 years.

“My music is mainly Afro jazz with influences of modern and traditional Zimbabwean sounds. I have been singing ever since I was a little girl. I appeared in local dramas and also in a movie called I’m the Future where I also sang the soundtrack to it. Performing live on stage with a band I started over 12 years ago,” said Selmor in an interview.

The artist, who is a wife and a mother of three, has four albums and is currently working on another.

Despite her lack of popularity in Malawi, Selmor said she is looking forward to performing in Malawi during the festival that will run from the September 28 to 30.

“It’s always exciting to perform for new people. I love the way they are pleasantly surprised to see how I perform and also seeing them get up and dance is always a pleasure. So I am looking forward to my performance in Malawi though not many know me. I have travelled to the UK, Finland, Namibia, South Africa and Spain for performances and I was at HIFA main stage last year,” she said.

Talking about her father who is one of Africa’s legends, the artist said she has learnt a lot from him despite her being born a musician.

Said Selmor: “I don’t see myself as walking along his path because if I did, it would be too much pressure for me. Rather I see myself as walking my own path, making my own mistakes and learning as I go. I am proud of my dad’s achievements and I am excited about what the future holds for me.

“I was not inspired to get into music but I was born to be a musician. I have however, learnt a lot from watching my dad do his thing and I try to implement some of those things into my own work. We are a family of singers, but I had a brother who was also a performing musician, he passed away in a car accident in 2010.”

Also representing Zimbabwe at Lake of Stars this year will be Tariro neGitare, who does a mixture of traditional sounds and contemporary urban, according to Lake of Stars Facebook page.
