Mulanje Festival ends with hike to Dziwe la Nkhalamba

The three-day Mulanje Festival came to a close on Sunday with thrills and fun at Dziwe la Nkhalamba pool on Mulanje Mountain.

The festival kicked off on Friday with a vibrant cultural night at Gate Way Lodge where traditional dances and music were on offer.

On Saturday the fun fair took centre stage, with a clean-up parade from Chitakale to Mulanje Boma, a kids’ corner and performances by artists who included Tay Grin, Lulu, Quest and Taril.

The festival’s public relations officer Priscilla Ntaba said on Sunday the objective is to bring people together, promote cultural exchange and support local businesses.

She said: “It also highlights the importance of environmental conservation which is crucial to our region. We’re proud to say that the festival has become an integral part of Malawi’s cultural calendar.

“We’re looking forward to expand and improve by introducing community-focused initiatives and explore ways to make the festival even more sustainable.”

The festival’s founder and director Michael Kwapata said their objective to bring people together to celebrate culture and promote a sense of community was fulfilled.

One of the attendees, Mphatso Kalondo, said he was happy with the event.

“The cultural night and hike to Dziwe la Nkhalamba were incredible. The fun fair was also great despite the rain,” he said.

The Mulanje Festival has established itself as a premier event in Malawi’s cultural calendar, attracting visitors from across the country and beyond.
