Mulanje to have rural sports entertainment

Mulanje businessperson, Damson Chelewani, has pledged to bring sports entertainment to the people of Chisitu in the district from November 4 when he launches a K500 000 (about $1 515) football and netball sponsorship.

“We have young talented boys and girls, but they lack exposure. As a businessperson and son of the area, I have decided to help in talent identification, where non-leaguers will be competing for football and netball trophies,” said Chelewani.

The launch of the competition which has so far attracted over 20 football and 15 netball teams, is expected to be graced by Flames captain Peter Mponda who is Surestream Academy technical director.

“We are targeting non-leaguers because we want to help the rural community to have a feel of their talents. The other thing is that we want to do away with the wrong practice of spending more money on administrators than the players.

“In this competition, more money will go straight to the participating and winning teams and the winners will receive their prizes on the spot,” said Chelewani.

He said prizes will be announced at the launch at Chisitu Primary School ground.

All non-league teams at Chisitu and the surrounding areas that have not registered are encouraged to do so within a fortnight after the launch.

Chelewani said he decided to sponsor the competition as one way of keeping youngsters in the area away from dangerous behaviours.
