The annual Mulhako wa Alhomwe celebrations scheduled for October 28 will cost over K80 million (about $268 000), organisers have said.

The organisers were speaking during a press briefing on Sunday at the Mulhako wa Alhomwe headquarters at Chonde, Mulanje.

The event’s chairperson responsible for transport and venue Leston Mulli said the budget for this year’s event has doubled.

Mulli said apart from the financial support totalling K30 million (about $100 000), the organisers have received 20 heads of cattle, 20 sheep and 50 goats from Lhomwes and other well-wishers nationwide.

“Mulhako wa Alhomwe has received more food and financial support than in the previous years.

“We are expecting about 40 000 people to come to the event because there has been a lot of positive feedback from Lhomwes and Malawians in general. Transport will be available in all regions for those who wish to come,” said Mulli.

Entertainment chairperson Betty Seyani said they plan to have 15 traditional dances for the event.

She also said there will be a dance competition and a vigil on October 27 to commemorate the late president Bingu wa Mutharika’s life and his contribution to the group whereas the main event will be on October 28 .

“We are urging all Malawians to come to the event and celebrate with us. There will be a lot of food, beer and dances to share with everyone,” said Seyani.
