Business magnate Leston Mulli has vowed to help the Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Division One outfit Chitakale FC to become the first Mulanje-based side to join the TNM Super League.

Mulli, whose company Mulli Brothers Group, sponsors the team through its subsidiary Chitakale Tea Plantations, said this after the lower league side drew 0-0 with Super League team Blantyre United in a curtain-raiser for the finals of Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust (MMCT) Top- Eight Tournament at Mulanje Boma Park last Sunday.

Currently, Chitakale FC are on position six with 57 points, but they will finish among the top-three teams and automatically qualify for the Premier Division if they win all their four remaining matches.

“Since time immemorial, Mulanje has never produced a Super League side. We only smelled it when our neighbouring district Thyolo had Conforzi Tea Estate in the elite league, but that was long time ago.

“We want to show the world that Mulanje is not backward in terms of producing football skills. You have seen for yourself the talent we have and let me assure you that we will give this team the necessary support to make this history,” said Mulli.

Chitakale FC joined the SRFL Division One after emerging as Mulanje Football League champions and Presidential Championships winners at district level in 2011.

During their inaugural season in 2012, they finished on position five before improving their standing to the fourth spot last season.
