Has pleaded for an end to war: Muluzi

Former president Bakili Muluzi has joined other former African presidents in calling for an end to fighting in South Sudan.

The war in the country erupted in December last year and has displaced over one million people.

In a letter dated June 9 2014, Muluzi has asked South Sudan President Salva Kiir and former vice-president Riek Machar to engage in an inclusive peace process that brings together warring factions and communities affected.

Other former African leaders who have made a similar call include Pierre Buyoya of Burundi, Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, John Kufuor of Ghana, Sir Quett Ketumile Masire of Botswana, Benjamin William Mkapa and Ali Hassan Mwinyi of Tanzania and Samuel Nujoma of Namibia.

The presidents have appealed to Kiir and Machar to replace war with dialogue so that the independence the 55th African nation hoped to enjoy can be realised peacefully.

“As signatories to this appeal we encourage you to recall the long and painful path the people of South Sudan have taken to achieve statehood.

“We know intimately what it means when Africans turn on each other and decide to resolve their differences by spilling one another’s blood. We cannot sleep easily while our fellow Africans in South Sudan continue to die needlessly,” the letter delivered to Kiir and Machar yesterday reads.

The African Union (AU) reports that over half of South Sudan’s 10 million population is at risk of starvation while 223 000 children are at risk of acute malnutrition and there are fears that 50 000 of these children may not survive.
