Expressed the need for technical colleges to start offering courses which are relevant to the development: Mussa

Minister of Labour and Manpower Development Henry Mussa has expressed the need for technical colleges to start offering courses which are relevant to the development of the country and the job market.

Mussa said this on Wednesday when he visited Technical, Entrepreneurial and Vocational Education and Training (Tevet) training centre in Blantyre.

The minister stressed the need for people to change their mindset from thinking that white-collar jobs are the “best deal” one can have to embracing jobs done by non-skilled labourers.

“There is need to improve unskilled labour force and change our mindset that rates white-collar jobs as the best and start thinking and appreciating technical, vocational and entrepreneurial jobs—the more reason government is planning to build community technical colleges in districts,” said Mussa.

In their remarks, district labour officers from the region presented to the minister challenges they face, among them, inadequate funding, shortage of staff and mobility.

Reacting to the concerns, Mussa said government has upgraded his ministry to among the initial top five ministries, hence it will move in quickly as possible to ensure the problems are addressed.

During the tour, the minister also visited Blantyre Trade Testing Centre, regional occupational health and safety offices and Nasawa Technical College.
