In a statement issued by State House, Mutharika described the late Mbewe as man of high integrity.

He said Mbewe will be greatly missed for his love and passion for Malawi. Mbewe also owned Dorvic Hotel at Chirimba in Blantyre.

Read part of the statement: “He was dedicated, obedient and patriotic for the development of Malawi. As a dedicated member of UDF, he demonstrated leadership skills that will be missed by all goodwill Malawians.”

UDF spokesperson, Ken Ndanga, described Mbewe’s death as a huge loss to the party.

“He was a dedicated, loyal, humble and hardworking member of the party. He contributed greatly during the 2014 elections by selling the party’s manifesto across the country. Such a breed of politicians is rare and UDF will really miss such a great person,” Ndanga said.

According to Ndanga, the funeral vigil is being held at Mbewe’s residence at Sunnyside in Blantyre.

He said burial will be held on Sunday, September 27 at the CI Cemetery in Blantyre.
