Mutharika weds Gertrude Maseko

Malawians braved a cold Blantyre morning to witness the wedding of newly elected President Peter Mutharika who tied the knot to Gertrude Maseko at the historic St Michael and All Angels CCAP Cathedral in Blantyre.

Mutharika, 74, has been single for the past 30 years following the death of his first wife Christophine, a Caribbean. He has three children Monique, Moyenda and Mahopela Peter.
Monique and Moyenda graced the wedding today.
Mutharika’s long- time friend Goodall Gondwe was among the first dignitaries to arrive and was seated by 9:30 am.
Other notable faces at the wedding included, Chief Justice Anastasia Msosa, Malawi Congress Party president Lazarus Chakwera, former first lady Callista Mutharika – wife to late Bingu wa Mutharika and former Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo.
Mutharika’s bridal party attracted attention with DPP heavyweights and long time friends Patricia Kaliati, Henry Mussa, George Chaponda all included in the party.
“I am happy for Professor Peter Mutharika that he has found a partner in Gertrude Maseko,” Catherine Salama, Mutharika’s family member told Nation Online.
The officiating clergy Rev Rodney Bona praised Mutharika for taking time to chose a partner.
“He has set a good example to the youth. I urge you the youth to take time to know your partner before you make life time commitment such as marriage,” he advised.
Mutharika’s wedding reception will be held at late Bingu’s Ndata Farm in Thyolo.
Malawi Vice President Saulosi Chilima who is chairman of the organising committee told Nation Online earlier that wedding is estimated to cost  K38 million (about US$95 000). All the money has been sourced from well wishers, according to Chilima.
