People from Senior Chief Mlumbe in Zomba have been told to have own toilets if they are to curb intestinal diseases that emanate from open defecation.

This observation was made recently during the celebration of the World Toilet Day that Millennium Villages Project (MVP) organised at Dindi Primary School in the district.

Team leader for MVP Andrew Daudi said they chose Senior Chief Mlumbe’s area because it is one of the areas in the district that used to be frequently hit by diarrhea and other infectious diseases as people relieved themselves in bushes.

“We are teaching these people the importance of constructing and using toilets instead of bushes since toilets induce good health habits among people. Besides that, we persuade the villagers that each toilet needs to have its own hand washing facility with soap,” he said.

Senior Chief Mlumbe expressed gratitude to MVP for mobilising the communities to adopt the idea of constructing toilets at their households.

“This initiative will tremendously reduce the number of unhygienic-related diseases. We encourage those households that have not dug toilets yet to immediately completely curb intestinal diseases in our area,” he said.
