Mwawi Kumwenda’s container loaded with desks and sports equipment sourced from New Zealand by well-wishers is stuck in Mozambique.
In an interview from Blantyre on Thursday, Kumwenda, who plays netball in New Zealand, said the container was supposed to arrive a month ago to enable her donate some materials to primary and secondary schools in the country.
She has since appealed to Sports Council to help clearance of the container.
“The Mozambican officials want to know what is inside the container as those who sent the container did not the complete paper work. I am waiting for some documents from New Zealand to help clear the container. I will involve the Ministry of Sports to assist in contacting their Mozambique counterparts. The content in the container is not for commercial use, but used materials for donation to orphans and schools,” said Kumwenda, who has just signed a new deal with Easiyo Tactix Club.
Apart from desks and clothes the container is also full of sports equipment like sets of netball uniforms, balls, shoes and many other apparel that she plans to donate in the country.
“I plan to conduct coaching clinics in secondary and primary schools with messages not only on sports but encouraging them to pursue their education to the fullest. I will also visit some hospital to donate clothes especially to children. There are a lot of clothes in the container and some educational material,” said Kumwenda.
She said she also plans to disseminate messages on education, health and many other life experiences that can help shape children into responsible citizens.
