Mwawi’s arrival sparks excitement in New Zealand

Malawi Queens’ shooter Mwawi Kumwenda sparked excitement among netball lovers when she arrived in New Zealand on Friday to play for her new team EasiYo Tactix.

The 24-year-old was given a warm welcome at  the airport.

Today, Mwawi is expected to meet her new teammates at Apollo Projects Centre in Christchurch ahead of their pre-season training next week.

According to the team’s website www.tactix.org.nz, New Zealand Mainland Zone chief executive officer Brigit Hearn said they were happy to finally have the star in their country.

“We’re going to pull out all the stops to make her feel welcome here in Christchurch and all starts with meeting her teammates and management on Sunday,” Hearn was quoted as sayingon Friday.

“We are excited that she has arrived safely and we are looking forward to a great 2014 season,” she said.

Mwawi signed for the Tactix for the 2014 season after successfully completing her three eight-month contracts with Victorian Netball League (VNL) side Peninsula Waves early this year.

She is the first player from Malawi to sign for an Australia-New Zealand (ANZ) Championship team after impressing in the Australian Netball League, where she became the first international player to scoop the Player of The Year Award.

Mwawi has spent some time in New Zealand over the past few seasons, most recently as a Malawi Queen’s team player competing in the New World Netball Series against New Zealand national team, Silver Ferns.

She was also one of the star shooters in the recent Fast-5 Netball World Series in New Zealand, where she underlined her credentials as a great shooter with a 95 percent scoring accuracy.
