Mwawi’s NZ Club in donations for Malawi

Mwawi Kumwenda’s netbal club in New Zealand has been running a campaign to raise donations towards her charity work.

Under the banner ‘Donations for Malawi’ the club has managed to raise funds, netball equipment, and other items.

“Her desire to help the people in her homeland of Malawi has prompted us to run this campaign.   Mwawi, particularly, wants to help the women and children of her village by getting them involved in sport.  She wants to raise funds to build a netball court and buy sporting equipment for the children in her village so that she can run coaching sessions with the children,” said a posting on the club’s website.

Mwawi’s friends and family at the EasiYo Tactix have also collected clothes, furniture, toys and books for the families in Mwawi village and are arranging for this to be shipped to Malawi, according to the website.

Mwawi will then distribute these when she returns home after representing Malawi at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.

Mwawi says she is disturbed that a lot of girls in her village opt for early marriage.

“A lot of the girls get married very young, like at 14. If they can come here and see a Malawian doing well, that would be great,’ she said.

Last night, Mwawi won two awards at the event organised by her Tactix club.

She won the Players’ Player of the Year and the club’s Player of the Year awards.
