Mwawi to sign new contract

Malawi’s sole netball export, Mwawi Kumwenda, is not only continuing to wow players and fans in New Zealand, but has now also secured a new contract with her Tactix Club for the next season.

Tactix chief executive Brigit Hearn confirmed to The Press (a New Zealand daily) that discussions had taken place around Mwawi’s return for 2015, beyond her present six-month contract that will expire next month.

In her first season in the Trans-Tasman Netball League, the 24-year-old Mwawi has been a revelation for the struggling Tactix. The 1.83-metre tall goal shooter has landed 356 goals from 391 attempts (a 91 percent success rate) in their opening nine games — the second highest in the competition.

According to game analysis reports, Mwawi has scored 40 or more goals in a game on six occasions, producing a season-best of 53 against the Northern Mystics in Christchurch last week.

quoted Hearn as saying Mwawi had been a major asset for the franchise on and

off the court, her bubbly personality and quirky sense of humour having proved to be a hit with sponsors and the media.

“We are delighted with her play and more than that, she is adapted to life here. The people of Mainland, too, have really embraced her as a player and made her feel very welcome,” Hearn is quoted as saying.

Mwawi, who is the first Malawi international to feature in the competition, says she loved the challenge of playing against the best netballers in the world on a weekly basis.

She says she relished the chance to be a part of the Tactix environment and was keen to come back next year.
