Mzikamanda, Ligoya’s fate on Friday
Newly proposed Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director Judge Rezine Mzikamanda and Malawi’s ambassador-designate to India Perks Ligoya will know their fate on Friday.
Parliament’s Public Appointments and Declaration of Assets Committee has been meeting in Lilongwe from Monday this week to, among others, confirm Mzikamanda as the new ACB director after his appointment last week.
Said committee chairperson Nick Masebo: “We have been meeting in Lilongwe to discuss several issues on the agenda, including three appointments of Justice Mzikamanda as ACB director as well as that of his [deputy] and the ambassadorial position of Dr. Ligoya to New Delhi.”
Should Mzikamanda be accepted by the committee, he will replace Alex Nampota who is now waiting for government to finalise his disengagement process from the bureau following an out-of-court settlement.
The absence of the ACB director and deputy has been a major concern to donors and analysts who argue the gap has compromised the fight against corruption in the country.
Ligoya, a former governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), was in May offered a diplomatic post to India where he replaces Dr. Chrissie Chawanje-Mughogho, who was among the first diplomats to be recalled late April after President Joyce Banda ascended to power following the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika.
