Nyalonje: There is need to have good referees

Mzimba North Constituency parliamentarian Agnes Makonda NyaLonje has pumped in K 1 million to run a six-day training course for 17 referees from her constituency.

The participants will be drilled in basic skills to enable them officiate games professionally.

“I consider football as something that needs to be incorporated in every community development agenda. For football to develop there is a need to have good referees because they are the ones who play a vital role in a match and that is why I decided to come up with this initiative,” said NyaLonje.

She said after this training the referees will also be vital in officiating her annual football tournament, which she is about to launch.

The training is being facilitated by officials from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and Sports Council.

Northern Region Football Association (NRFA) vice-president Zuza Nyondo, who is one of the course facilitators, said successful referees will be awarded a Grade III certificate.

National Referees Committee (NRC) chairperson Patrick Kapanga appreciated the initiative, saying it will enable the committee to have more qualified referees.
