Mzuzu University (Mzuni) has finalised an assessment exercise for 945 suspended government-sponsored students and is set to conduct disciplinary hearing for those implicated.

The High Court in Mzuzu gave Mzuni four consecutive ultimatums to handle the students’ suspension case. The first task was to have disciplinary assessments for suspended students completed by February 6 2015.

mzuniThe court also called on the university to conduct disciplinary hearing for students implicated in the disciplinary assessments from February 9 to February 13 and the outcome be communicated by February 27.

Since the students were suspended prior to examinations, the court also ordered Mzuni to administer examinations to students who have been found innocent by March 14 2015.

Giving an update on the case, Mzuni vice-chancellor Robert Ridley said the university was through with the assessment and concerned students were being communicated to.

He said disciplinary hearing for those implicated would commence this week and the outcome would be communicated by the end of February.

However, the period is contrary to the court order which stated that disciplinary hearing run from February 9 to 13 and that the outcome be communicated by February 27.

Said Ridley: “The timetable indicated by the court on the disciplinary hearings was a confirmation of our timetable of activities.

“An assessment of which of the 945 suspended students have specific disciplinary cases to answer has been made. Communication to the concerned students is being finalised and distributed.”

Mzuni Students Representative Council (Musrec) president Godknows Mwale said students were expecting that they will appear before disciplinary committee from February 9 to 13 as instructed by the court.

However, he said he was yet to come across a student who had been booked for disciplinary hearing.
