The Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) chief executive officer Bruce Munthali said yesterday that Minister of Agriculture and Food Security James Munthali is scheduled to officially cast the floors open at around 9 o’clock.

According to the Munthali, as of last week, about 1 978 bales of tobacco were in stock at Malawi’s second biggest floors in terms of handling the volume of tobacco after Lilongwe Auction Floors.

“The normal capacity per day for Mzuzu floors is 5 000 bales of tobacco per day but 1 978 bales merits commencement of the market and prospects are good for the sales, generally,” he said.

Munthali said so far tobacco in stock at Mzuzu auction floors is of good quality and “well-managed,” but admitted that normally poor leaf characterises early days of tobacco marketing as the leaf comes from vendors.
