The Mzuzu Lions Club on Kamuzu Day donated surgical equipment worth K700 000 (about $1 666) to Chintheche Rural Hospital in Nkhata Bay.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Lions previous district governor Faisal Karim said the club was moved by lack of drugs and medical equipment in most hospitals in the country.

Karim said the hospital which serves a population of about 25 000 people was selected after thorough consultations with medical personnel.

“We sourced the equipment from friends of Lions Club of Mzuzu in the United Kingdom, this is just the beginning, we will come back with more,” he said.

Hospital-in-charge Gryson Kumwenda said the equipment which includes a nebuliser is timely as the hospital had none for the past six months.

Before visiting Chintheche, the Lions also cheered the sick at Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) Paediatric ward where they donated assorted items worth K100 000 (about $238).
