Richard Bingu was in tears of joy on Saturday night when he won a live bull in the Northern Region Individual Pool Tournament at Chenda Hotel in Mzuzu.

Bingu has participated in many individual pool competitions, but never won such a big prize. The biggest was a goat he won sometime back.

Bingu beat Brievin Nyirenda in the finals in a competition that attracted 50 players.

Previous champions Bonface Mazamba, Shaba Mhura, Kelson Mwenyemufipa, among others, stumbled before reaching the paid ranks.

“I thank my playing partners for giving me a good show. I also thank the Dick Botha family for organising such a fantastic competition. Nobody gave me a chance, but God did,” Bingu told fans.

Defeated Nyirenda had no kind words. He accused Bingu of ending the game through short cut, when he hit the blackball before hitting the other balls.

“At least we need some quality if our fans are to appreciate our titles by not sending the game in a premature end like this,” said Nyirenda.

Nyirenda carted home K8 000 for coming second. William Figo Gondwe pocketed K5 000 whereas businessperson Fenzo Ferreira of Tsangano, Ntcheu, who plays for Nelson Sportlight Club received K3 500 for coming fourth.

Chairperson of the Northern Region Pool League James Msowoya, thanked participants for maintaining discipline in the game. He appealed to the clubs to quickly pay their affiliation fee so that the league can start.

Botha congratulated Bingu on his achievement. He told the participants that he is thinking of coming back bigger and better to even let the winner drive home a car such as a Starlet.
