Naizi, Mbayani are BT Mayor’s Trophy champs

Naizi and Mbayani primary schools are champions of the rejuvenated Blantyre Mayor’s Trophy following their triumph in the finals at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

In front of a sizeable crowd that included guest of honour Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa and Blantyre City Mayor Noel Chalamanda, Naizi confined Makata Primary School to a 2-0 beating in football while Mbayani thrashed Chilomoni Primary School 25-7 to take the netball glory.

For their success,  Naizi and Mbayani received K400 000 each while the losing finalists got K300 000 apiece.

Madalitso Palesa put Naizi in front with a header just a minute into the game before Martin Kumwembe sealed the victory with a simple tap-in following a goalmouth scramble deep in the second half.

“We thank God for the glory.  We are hopeful that He will help us to defend the trophy next year, “ said Naizi coach Edman Mapulanga,  whose side produced the tournament’s top-scorer with 20 goals Chinsinsi Mussa and man-of-the-match Yohane Jimu.

On his part, Makata coach Kingsley Kabango, whose side found solace in having Dan Nyambose as player-of-the-tournament, rued numerous scoring opportunities.

Chalamanda said they are happy  the 2016 edition has ended well and he thanked the corporate world for making the event a success.

Nankhumwa,  who pumped K1 million into the competition,  said government will continue supporting youth development through sports. n
