Nanzikambe-Konstanz’s Aid Machine premieres overseas

Nanzikambe Arts actors continue breaking new ground in Europe. The Chameleons of Naperi in Blantyre added their footprints on European soil with the launch of World 3.0: The Aid Machinery in Konstanz, Germany, on Friday.

On the new play, six Malawian actors collaborate with members of the German group Theatre Kostanz who toured Blantyre with Reinventing Parzival last year.

Nanzikambe has contributed Dipolathu Katimba, Otooli Masanza, Jeremiah Mwaungulu and Misheck Mzumara to the cast while the Germans feature Julia Philippi, Susie Wirth, Bulambo Noah, Thomas Corner, and Michael Muller.

“We are still in business on European soil.  Rehearsals [are] finished and Malawi tour [is] set for July,” said Nanzikambe director Thokozani Kapiri in a Facebook shout-out, signalling the near accomplishment of the mission which has kept them overseas for the past two months.

Kapiri has co-written the play with Mzumara and Konstanz directors Clemens Bechtel and Thomas Spieckermann. He and Bechtel have also added their names to the directors’ list.

The joint effort is a continuation of the lake-to-lake partnership which saw Nanzikambe performing The Messenger in the host city. It brings to one stage a combination of English, German and Chichewa to bring out the geopolitics of aid from the perspectives of both developed and undeveloped countries.

The play might as well be a satire or bold statement on Malawi, which is currently negotiating the resumption of aid taps after the donor dearth which marked the end of the late president Bingu wa Mutharika’s dictatorship.
