Malawi Stock Exchange (MSE)-listed commercial bank, National Bank of Malawi (NBM), on Wednesday donated K1 million (about $6 000) to Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima) to help the institution address water problems at the college.

This is the second time NBM donated to Cunima towards the cause. On September 28 2008, the bank contributed K884 850 (about $5 298) to the purchase and installation of a water pump at the campus.

Presenting a cheque to Cunima, NBM chief executive officer George Partridge said clean drinking and adequate water for sanitation is essential to the institution.

“Water, as they say, is literally life. You will have noted that even the State President lamented only about a week ago that he may not be able to open the new university at Thyolo due to lack of water.

Cunima vice-chancellor Professor Anaclet Phiri said the university continues to face acute water problems due to water losses caused by old pipes.
