National Bank of Malawi (NBM) Lilongwe and Capital City service centres staff on Sunday, New Year’s Day, donated various items to patients at Mlale and Likuni hospitals in Lilongwe Rural.

The donated items included salt, sugar, soap, rice, butter as well as pails all valued at K500 000 ($3 000).

Speaking after presenting the items at Likuni Mission Hospital, NBM Lilongwe Service Centre manager George Nyirenda said they made the donation as one way of alleviating the suffering of the patients during the festive season.

“At National Bank, we have a culture of sharing with the needy because we know that they are our customers. We always make it a point that during festivities we share the little we have with the less privileged in our society,” said Nyirenda.

Chief clinical officer at Mlale Hospital, Louis Zimba, and Likuni Hospital human resource management officer, Watson Mluka, thanked NBM for the gesture.

“This hospital is in a rural set up and most patients cannot afford basic needs. By donating the items to the patients, their pain and suffering has somehow been lessened,” said Zimba.
