The case of police officers accused of breaking and stealing at former president  Bingu wa Mutharika’s Casablanca Manor at Ndata Farm is in limbo as the prosecutor who was handling the case is no longer with the Malawi Police Service.

Three police officers, Luka Magodo, Mayeso Mwansambo and Chisomo Kaleso from Police Mobile Services (PMS) were in August last year arrested in connection with the break-in and the case has been going on at Midima Court in Blantyre under second grade magistrate Loyce Chirwa.

Chirwa found the three with a case to answer.

However, regional prosecutions inspector Alick Nkhwazi, who was handling the case has so far retired.

“I am currently on holiday pending retirement. This means that I am no longer handling the case and I do not know how far it has gone,” said Nkhwazi in an interview on Friday.

Police public relations officer for the South Beatrice Mikuwa said on Sunday she was not aware of Nkhwazi’s retirement and needed to check on the case’s progress.

Regional prosecutions officer for the South, Davie Mtete, said he was not in office hence could not comment on the case.

“Again, I am not police spokesperson and if I gather the information, I will give it to the spokesperson who will give you,” said Mtete.

The three police officers were on duty when the incident happened.
