Three new faces are on the list of nominees for the Player of the Tournament Award in the GOtv Fast5 Netball Champions League which winds up tomorrow at Don Bosco in Lilongwe.

Complex Tigresses shooter Ellen Chiboko, Blue Eagles Sisters centre Takondwa Lwazi and Civonets defender Beauty Nyangulu are the only candidates contesting the prized accolade for the first time.

Conspicuously missing on the list is last year’s winner Carol Mtukule-Ngwira, who has not been nominated even for the best defender, best centre and best shooter awards. Complex Tigresses’ Sindi Simtowe has also not been nominated for the Best Shooter Award.

During this year’s gala night tomorrow at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe, Towera Vinkhumbo (Diamonds), Grace Mhango (Tigresses), Martha Dambo (MTL Queens) and Nyangulu will battle for the Best Defender Award.

For the Best Centre Award, the nominees are Lwazi, Beatrice Mpinganjira (Tigresses), Bridget Kumwenda (Diamonds) and Rose Mkanda (Civonets). Chiboko, Grace Chazungulira (Diamonds), Cecilia Mtukule (Blue Eagles) and Loveness Sambo (Mafco) have been nominated for the best shooter prize.

According to MultiChoice Malawi marketing manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda, a section of media personalities, former netballers and umpires were mandated to nominate the players for the awards.

“We cannot reveal names of people who nominated the players because that could go against our procedures. But what you should know is that a different team of media personalities, former players and umpires will declare the eventual winners of the awards on Saturday,” said Nyirenda.

The final round of the GOtv contest will start today at Don Bosco where Tigresses need a single win in their remaining five matches to snatch the title from defending champions Diamonds.
