New Monkey Bay market, bus depot take shape

The construction of a modern market and a bus depot at Monkey bay in Mangochi has taken shape and is expected to be completed between August and September, 2014, the Mangochi District Council has said.

Speaking in an interview last week during a media tour organised by the Local Development Fund (LDF), Mangochi District Council Public Works Officer Cleaverson Nyando said originally, the project was earmarked for completion in February 2014 but stalled between December 2013 and March 2014 ‘due to other circumstances.’

Mangochi is one of the four districts where Local Economic Development (Led) program is being implemented with the aim of contributing to pro poor growth and poverty reduction.

The programme follows a decentralised approach where the councils take a leading role in implementation program which in turn empower communities to do the implementation.

Nyando said the modern market comprises of kiosks and restaurants, butcheries, slaughter houses, open sheds and other platforms where vendors will be constructing their own stores.

The market, according to Nyando, will accommodate more than 220 vendors.

He said the project, worth K563 million for both market and bus depot is being funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) through LDF.

“Monkey Bay as a growth center, we believe the project will result into economic empowerment of rural people through creation of employment among other benefits,” he added.
