Pupils of Ulongwe in Balaka are wearing broad smiles after Help Malawi, a US-based international charitable non-governmental organisation (NGO), handed over a K10 million (US$23 866) classroom block built at Nanthomba L.E.A Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalembo in the district.

Help Malawi built the structure with funding from Korean National Commission for Unesco.

Speaking during the inauguration of the block recently, Help Malawi country director Wells Sakala said the facility was part of a project that aims to improve access to quality basic education in deprived areas.

Sakala urged the beneficiaries to take care of the structure.

District education manager for Balaka Valentino Champiti commended the NGO for its unwavering support and commitment in improving access to education.

“The school has been in dire need of the facility. The learning environment was not conducive for pupils, which forced many of them to drop out of school. But with your support, it will certainly motivate them to return to school,” said Champiti.

The ceremony was witnessed by chiefs, officials of Help Malawi and their partners, teachers, the community and pupils.

Help Malawi works in partnership with ministries of education to improve the living standards of children in rural areas.
