NGO inspires primary school learners in Mchinji
Girls Activist Youth Organisation is conducting role modelling and mentorship sessions in primary schools in Mchinji to inspire learners to remain in school.
Speaking on Friday during a role modelling and mentorship session at Rusa Primary School in Traditional Authority Kapondo, the organisation’s field officer Karen Seyani said they want to address dropout rate in the district.
She said they learned the initiative after learning that child marriages were rampant in the district.
“We parade different people working with government and the private sector to motivate learners to work hard in school,” said Seyani.
She said through their stories, the models showed that learners from rural villages can also achieve their goals if they work hard.
Rusa Primary School deputy head teacher Jacob Mbewe thanked the non-governmental organisation (NGO) for arranging the role modelling and mentorship programme at the school.
“Learners had the opportunity to interact with people working with government and the private sector. These are people they look up to in life,” he said.
Standard Seven learner Mary Benjamin said the models inspired them with their stories.
Police officers, officials from the Ministry of Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare and Mchinji District Education Office shared inspiring stories during the role modelling and mentorship session.
Girls Activist Youth Organisation is implementing Rusa Community Engagement and Sponsorship Project in partnership with Anglican Council in Malawi with funding from World Vision Malawi.
