NGO moves to keep girls in school in Dowa District

Teams Advancing Women in Agriculture (Tawina) says it is committed to supporting households in Dowa District to ensure that girls remain in school.

The organisation’s programmes officer Aness Banda said this on Monday during the celebration of achievements in women empowerment interventions the organisation has implemented since its inception in 2009.

She said: “The organisation seeks to promote the rights of women and girls through the formation of various groups so that they remain in school and not rush into early marriages.

“We, therefore, will intensify efforts to support the families with start-up capital to make them self-reliant.”

Banda said they have supported women groups who are into bee keeping, soy bean production and tailoring.

“We want to see such women access markets for their products,” she said.

Tigwirizane Women Group chairperson Janet Gaulani said the organisation promoted their bee-keeping farming.

“We support girls’ education,” she said.

Recently, the organisation donated uniforms and sanitary items to needy and outstanding learners in six primary schools in Dowa.

The organisation is supporting 25 women clubs comprising at least 3 000 members.

During the event, women went away with various prizes such as mobile phones, T-shirts and wrappers to celebrate and encourage them to work hard.
