A Blantyre-based non-governmental organisation, A Self-Help Assistance Programme (ASAP), has urged communities to adopt and popularise the culture of saving to put themselves on a sustainable economic footing.

ASAP has been running a project to promote community banking and savings in Senior Chief Kapeni in Blantyre which phased out on Thursday.

At least 1 075 people in the area benefitted from the project.

Speaking on Thursday during a review meeting, ASAP executive director Twisiwile Mwaighogha urged the community to continue banking and saving.

“The project has come to an end today, but we encourage participants to continue saving money because the culture has promoted small-scale businesses in the area.

“We began training the community in April last year. During the period, communities in Senior Chief Kapeni alone saved K25 million,” said Mwaighogha

One of the beneficiaries, Habiba Kaunda from Kaning’a Village in the area, said she will remember ASAP for training her in saving and banking.
