Five non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have formed a group called Malawi Alliance on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights aimed at promoting rights-based approaches to sexual and reproductive health through advocacy and capacity building.
The five are Centre for Human Rights and rehabilitation (CHRR), Youth Net and Counselling (Yoneco), Youth Empowerment for Civic Education (Yece), Family Planning Association of Malawi (Fpam) and Centre for Alternatives for Victimised Women and Children.

Speaking on Sunday during a media tour at Kavalo Health Post in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kasisi in Chikhwawa, the alliance’s national programme coordinator, Talimba Bandawe, said their target audience includes poor women and other disadvantaged groups.
Bandawe noted that many people do not consider as a matter of concern such issues as comprehensive sexuality education, contraception and safe pregnancies.
“The alliance’s goal is to improve quality of sexual and reproductive health and health rights among less priviledged communities. We will also promote gender equality and fight HIV and Aids,” she said.
The NGOs are implementing a five-year project called Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights in Mangochi, Dedza and Chikhwawa districts with funding from SRHR Alliance in the Netherlands through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
