Nice urges youths to shun political violence

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust has urged youths from different political parties in Mangochi District to refrain from violence ahead of the September 2025 General Elections.

Speaking on Tuesday after meeting Young Politicians Union (YPU), Mangochi Nice programme officer Joseph Chamambala said it was important to sensitise the youth on the need for peaceful co-existence.

He said: “It is good for you to embrace co-existence and tolerance as the country is heading towards next year’s elections.

“This will help ensure peaceful, credible and fair elections.”

Chamambala said most episodes of violence that occur in the district are orchestrated by the youth after being sponsored by some political party leaders.

“Let us work together as youths and ensure peace to let democracy grow because we are in a democratic dispensation,” he said.

Chamambala also encouraged the youth to participate in development activities in their areas to ensure that the country achieves the aspirations of the Malawi 2063.

Young Politicians Union director Yusuf William, who represents People’s Party, commended Nice for the engagement.

“The meeting opened our eyes on how we can participate in politics without being used as agents of violence. We pledge to spearhead peace in our communities,” he said.

During the meeting, Nice also engaged Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) to explain to the youth about the amended electoral laws.

In his presentation, Mangochi district MEC election officer Roderick Kazembe highlighted the new electoral laws such as the use of national identity (IDs) cards to vote and change in voting time and date.

But the youth bemoaned the delay to process the IDs and asked the commission to intervene in the exercise.

Nice held the meeting with funding from the European Union under Boma Lathu Project
