Persons with albinism in Nkhotakota have commended government for coming up with punitive measures for albino abusers.

Government, through Malawi Law Commission, amended the Penal Code from vagrancy laws to stiffer punishments, saying the former increased the abductions, killings and exhumation of graves of albinos.

Speaking on Monday during a meeting National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust organised for the disadvantaged groups in the district, Nkhotakota Association of Persons with Albinism chairperson Limbani Malunga said the new law is a relief to people with albinism.

“We were hunted like animals and the perpetrators did not care because the sentences were lenient. We believe the new law will change the situation,” he said.

Nkhotakota Nice district civic education officer James Mumba said the Anatomy Act would help magistrates to mete out stiff sentences, hence this would deter would-be offenders.

He said the previous law was a mockery to the albinos regarding their right to life. n
