No targets again for Kinnah—Govt, FAM
Malawi government and Football Association of Malawi have said they cannot set targets for Flames coach Kinnah Phiri because his job is performance-based.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Alex Mseka and FAM president Walter Nyamilandu said this when responding to a question on whether targets will be set as they renew Kinnah’s contract.
“We have benchmarks that we set in terms of development and competitions. That is what I meant by performance-based,†said Mseka.
In the previous two-year contract that expired on June 30, there were also no clear set targets for the coach.
Said Mseka: “We have what is called a performance-based contract and just like any other civil servant, we will not set any conditions. In performance-based contracts, we do not set targets for the employee. What happens is that the concerned parties agree on the expectations.â€
Mseka also said despite the expiry of the contract, Kinnah is still working pending its renewal.
On his part, Nyamilandu said it would be unfair to set targets for the coach when some of his conditions are not met.
“Of course, there have to be obligations from either party, but have we given the coach the necessary resources for us to set targets? If either party complies and adheres to the contract it would perhaps be applicable because both parties would work hard to achieve the end goal.â€
Nyamilandu cited failure to meet the programmes put forward by the coach, saying in most cases Flames programmes are either cancelled or done at the last minute.
However, the FAM president said the expectation is that Kinnah will lead the Flames to qualify for 2013 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in South Africa early next year.
Youth and Sports Minister Enoch Chakufwa Chihana shared the view recently, saying the coach does not get the expected resources.
“Why should we set targets for him when he has not set conditions for us?†said Chihana.
On his part, Kinnah said his target is to qualify for the 2013 Nations Cup.
