Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) has partnered Beautify Malawi (Beam) Trust to support education of the girl child through bursaries.

The board’s director of people and culture Dongakhulu Hlongo says the institution has given Beam K1.5 million to identify and provide school fees to 50 needy learners in the Northern Region.

He was speaking on Friday after the two institutions handed over a K234 000 cheque to six students at Nkhorongo Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in the Mzuzu.

He said the support is part of NRWB’s corporate social responsibility to keep learners in school, especially girls who are vulnerable to dropouts.

Said Hlongo: “After Beam approached us, we decided to partner with them by offering these scholarships. We understand that girls lag behind in education usually because of financial constraints.”

Beam chairperson Mayamiko Mwinjilo said the trust will not only focus on the girl child, but also support boys in dire need of support.

“However, our primary target is the girl child because statistics indicate that dropout rates are higher among girls than boys,” he said. n
