Nsanje District Council has emphasised its position to minimise impact of disasters in the district as the rainy season approaches.

The council’s chairperson Andrew Piriminta said this was why the responsible committee has embarked on awareness campaigns in prone areas to ensure there is minimal impact on people’s lives and property.

He said it was high time the council took a proactive stand to ensure the district registered minimal damage during disasters.

“As elected members and the ones championing development in the district, we decided to engage communities in disaster-prone areas as a preparedness strategy,” said Piriminta.

He said disaster strikes affect development activities and plans.

“We lose a lot during disasters as our efforts are geared towards providing support to the affected communities.

“Even government spends money in response activities,” Piriminta said.

He commended government for providing resources through Other Recurrent Transactions (ORT) to councils which he said will help in reaching out to most communities.

Mlolo Area Civil Protection Committee chairperson Rex Dausi said the community engagement will go a long way in reducing disaster risks.
