Nsanje District Hospital official Jackson Kausiwa conceded that the district has a high prevalence rate, but was quick to say some interventions have been lined up to reduce the pervasiveness of the disease.

He said: “Despite the malaria prevalence rate being on the higher side, the district health office has been employing various interventions aimed at reducing malaria infections. For instance, we have been distributing insecticide, treated bed nets to pregnant women and under-five children.”

However, Kausiwa expressed concern over the behaviour of some people who abuse the mosquito nets, thereby frustrating efforts to reduce malaria infections in the district.

He hailed United Methodist Church in Malawi for complementing government’s efforts to combat the disease.

The church plans to distribute insecticid, treated mosquito nets to about 2 000 households in the area of Chief Mbenje in the district through their K30 million ($57) Imagine No Malaria Programme.

United Methodist Church national health board coordinator in Malawi, Chancy Nthowela, said the one year programme funded by the United Methodist Committee in Relief of America is a response to the Shire Valley’s situation as far as malaria is concerned.
