People in Nsanje have decried corrupt practices which they claim are rampant at Nsanje Police Station.

The concerned people allege that some police officers at the station demand cash from complainants for speedy delivery of justice.corruption

One of the concerned, Christina Daga, 39, of Fulukiya Village, Senior Chief Malemia, said she was forced to pay a police officer she can identify, to have a person who allegedly burnt her house on August 13 2015 arrested.

Said Daga: “I am a woman who depends on proceeds from locally distilled spirit liquor [Kachasu] sales. I had a rude awakening on the night of August 13 when my house was torched.”

She said she reported the matter to police but nothing happened. She alleges that the officer handling her case told her they would only arrest the suspect if they are paid something.

Due to financial challenges as a result of the fire incident, she was forced to seek assistance from Kuchene Womens’ Forum where she got K1 500.

“The suspect was arrested soon after I paid the sum, only to be released within hours after bribing the police with K6 000,” she claimed.

Nsanje Police Station officer-in-charge Kirby Kaunga said he is not aware of the development as he has not been in the office for some time. He, however, said he would to follow up on the allegations. n
