Nsanje Police trains crime prevention committees
Nsanje Police Station has established crime prevention committees to equip the communities to execute their task of preventing crime professionally.
The station’s officer in-charge Joseph Mutupha said this in an interview on Monday after the training to ensureg that the district is crime-free.
He said: “We are training them and to let them to know their boundaries when they are executing their job, including reporting mechanisms.
“We are glad that all this has been possible with support from our partners such as Unicef who gave us reflectors, whistles and torches, including money for the activity.”
The station’s executive committee chairperson Mike Dansa said the district has 145 trained police officers providing security to people and their properties.
He also said that the relationship between the police officers and the communities is cordial.
Group village head Njobvu from Traditional Authority Ngabu thanked Nsanje Police Station for establishing crime prevention committees and equipping them with trainings.
He said: “We are glad that the police station has allowed us to have our own committees of crime prevention, which will be working with other committees such as Station Executive Committee, Community Policing Forum and Crime Prevention Panel so that our area is free from criminal activities.
“We have selected people of good behaviour and those that have not committed any crime.
In 2023, the crime rate in Nsanje dropped to 257 per 100 000 people compared to the previous year’s 888 per 100 000 people, according the Malawi Police Service Annual Report 2023
