Ntcheu Nice calls for knowledge boost

National Initiative for Civic Education (Nice) Trust says only knowledgeable duty-bearers can effectively develop their communities.

Speaking on Wednesday at Masasa in the district after a two-day citizen assembly meeting for 48 development structure members, Ntcheu Nice district civic education officer Alinafe Chikakuda said duty-bearers should be conversant with local government procedures to effectively contribute to developing their areas.

“Members of development structures play a crucial role in initiating, monitoring and tracking projects and it is when they are well trained and know what is expected of them that they can deliver,” she said.

Chikakuda said empowerment guarantees development sustainability as there would be enhanced citizen voice and duty-bearer accountability.

Lizulu Ward councillor Allan Jaziel said one of the problems affecting their work is failure to connect with the rights-holders on development. He, therefore, expressed hope that the training will provide  solutions to the problems.

Group village head (GVH) Kalima said development leaders should be gender sensitive, accountable, transparent and responsive to lead and meet aspirations of the people.

Nice is carrying out Programme Estimate 3 Project with funding from the European Union (EU). n
