The Association of Women, Religious Institute of Malawi (AWRIM) has trained 20 Catholic nuns in financial management.

The training, which was funded by the Hilton Foundation of United States of America, drew nuns from different congregations of the Catholic Church in Malawi.

Course facilitator Patrick Gathi Wanyanga said the nuns were equipped with skills and knowledge in accounting, digital calculation and grant proposal writing.

Wanyanga observed that most of the nuns, who work as bursars and administrators, do not have requisite knowledge, especially on how to prepare budgets; hence, the need for the training.

He said apart from their pastoral calling, nuns are also involved in non-spiritual activities that serve the interests of the church as well as Christians themselves.

“Thus, they need to be equipped with different professional skills and this course is one such means through, which we want to empower them to serve their churches and communities better,” said Wanyanga

Sr. Annis Chikufenji—a Carmelite Missionaries’ nun who works as stores clerk and cashier for Mtengowanthenga Hospital—said the skills she acquired from the training will contribute to the improvement in her handling of church resources.
