FAM executive committee member David Dube says the association’s president Walter Nyamilandu has confused affiliates with his dramatic U-turn to run a fourth time despite vehemently saying he was bowing out.

“That is confusing the affiliates. One should choose one line of thought as these are policy matters. Changing statements is confusing affiliates as people were beginning to prepare their own avenues,” said the member who belongs to the association’s finance committee.

Nyamilandu, who when called months ago repeatedly insisted he had said enough that he was not standing again, told Friday’s edition of The Nation that he had succumbed to pressure from six FAM affiliates namely the Southern and Northern region football associations, coaches and National Youth Football Committee.

“I am reconsidering my position and instead I will stand. It is not an easy decision, but if the affiliates want me, I should listen. It means they have confidence in my ability,” Nyamilandu said.

Reacting to Dube’s claim, Nyamilandu yesterday said: “Strange when its same affiliates asking me to stand. This is an indication that they know what they want. They all have a right to exercise their freedom of choice”.

NYFC chairperson Mabvuto Missi also told The Nation that since Nyamilandu earlier decided against standing “we have seen no one with credibility coming forward to stand for the presidency.”

But Dube insisted that it was incorrect that there are no candidates to vie for the hot seat, observing that “Malawi will always have people and that is also how he [Nyamilandu] also came forward to stand.”
