Nyasa Candy: The industry is not financially open to unsigned artists like us

Lilongwe-based trio Nyasa Queens, who are the girls behind the hit song, Uisova, have admitted it is not an easy ride in the country’s music industry.

After they released the debut single Uisova, a slang that has become popular among the Malawian youth, Nyasa Queens announced they would be releasing a mixtape titled Swag Yako last March, but it never came out.

In an interview from the Capital, the trio revealed the project had slowed down because they were experiencing “some hiccups”.

“Not much has been achieved,” disclosed the group’s lead rapper Alice Mtanga, popularly known as Nyasa Candy.

Said the 21-year-old: “The industry is not financially open to unsigned artists like us; so it’s not easy to fund sessions, promos and all other expenses on our own. It’s a big problem.”

The girls also bemoaned “unfair behavior” by some radio DJs, claiming they were demanding kickbacks from artists to get their music on air, which they said was another burden not only to them but to the growth of the industry in general.

Nyasa Queens, probably the only female hip-hop group in the country, came on the local music scene late last year with a promise to lift the female representation in an industry dominated by male artists.

Despite the challenges, the three young ladies said they were poised for stardom and would do whatever it takes to make an impact and see their dream come true.

Nyasa Queens dropped a new single last week titled Shut ‘em down, which is currently in the Top 10 of the malawi-music.com and FM 101 Power’s Gowelo Beats.
