Flames forward Atusaye Nyondo at the weekend dropped to a distant ninth position in the South African Premier Soccer League’s (PSL) scorers chart.

Nyondo has so far scored six goals—four behind current leading scorer Katlego Mphela of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Bafana Bafana’s current all-time leading scorer Benni McCarthy and Zambian legend Collins Mbesuma each scored a brace for Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows to overtake Nyondo in their teams’ 3-2 and 4-1 respective wins against Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg United on Saturday.

Both McCarthy and Mbesuma have scored seven goals apiece.

At one time in the first round, Nyondo was joint leading scorer alongside Mphela, but has not scored in a league game for a long time.

The SuperSport United forward told KickOff.com recently that he intends to score 18 goals or more this season.

“My target is to score 18 goals. Actually, I want to score more than that, but that is just the target,” Nyondo was quoted as saying.

Despite going through a brief goal drought at his club, Nyondo scored twice as the Flames went down 3-2 to Chad in a 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in N’djamena.

He could not finish the match after being injured with a missile thrown at him by a fan.

Nyondo missed the last two fixtures for SuperSport against Batau in a NedBank Cup and a league game against Black Leopards following his deportation for failing to produce a yellow fever vaccine certificate.

Nyondo, who was named PSL Player of the Month for August/September last year, arrived at SuperSport United from Carara Kicks at the beginning of the 2011/12 season.

He won the Golden Boot Award in the National First Division last season.
