OG Issa netball shifted to St Andrew’s

Fear of rains at the Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) has forced the Southern Region Netball League (SRNL) to shift today’s OG Issa League games to St Andrew’s International High School where there is an indoor court.

According to SRNL general secretary Annie Hanjahanja-Billie, the BYC court is not playable in wet weather as it gets slippery.

“We had no choice but to use the little money we had to pay the school to allow us to play at their indoor court. We do not want the players to get injured due to the slippery surface at BYC,” said Billie.

She said they would try to negotiate with the school to allow them to complete their remaining games this rainy season at the indoor court as the league is behind schedule to complete the first-round fixtures by the end of this month.

In today’s fixtures, defending champions Diamonds will take on Aquaid Queens at 10.30am before MTL Queens battle it out against Shizaella Queens at noon. Tigresses are set to battle it out against Prison Sisters at 1.30pm whereas MTL Queens will be up against Woget Stars at 3pm.

Tigresses are currently at the top of the table with 24 points while Woget Stars are second with 21 points from 10 encounters. Diamonds are fourth with 15 points followed by MTL Queens on the fifth slot with 12 points from four games.

The two BYC courts always get submerged in water because of poor drainage system. The courts were refurbished early last year to host the African Netball Championships, which South Africa won after beating Malawi Queens in the finals.
