Operations resume at CZ Council
Business has resumed at Chiradzulu District Council after differences between district commissioner (DC) Memory Kaleso and Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) councillors turned ugly when the DC’s office was sealed.
The resumption follows mediation talks facilitated by Malawi Local Government Association (Malga) on Wednesday at Chiradzulu Boma.
The councillors led by council chairperson Emmanuel Kamwendo sealed the DC’s office last week, accusing her of not involving them in the management of the council’s affairs.
In solidarity with the DC, secretariat staff downed their tools, arguing that they could not continue working in the absence of their chief executive officer.
However, following the Malga intervention the situation was amicably resolved and workers have resumed their work.
The councillors and the DC have also assured each other of working together in fostering development in the district.
Said Kaleso: “I hold no grudge against any council member. What has been happening is now water under the bridge and let us join hands to deliver quality services to the people we serve.”
In his remarks, Malga executive director Charles Chunga said they intervened with a contact and dialogue meeting considering that the disagreements were negatively affecting innocent people in the villages.
He observed that the disagreements largely emanated from poor communication between the two sides.
On his part, Kamwendo commended Malga for the timely intervention, saying what has been agreed upon will be fully implemented to ensure that peace prevails between them.
Earlier this week, Chiradzulu Police Station said the councillors risked arrest for conduct likely to cause breach of peace over their action to seal the DC’s office. The councillors were also being investigated for threats allegedly issued to some council secretariat staff for siding with the DC.
