Optichem 2000 Malawi on Friday donated 400 blankets, 200 bags of 20 kilogrammes of maize and 200 bags of 5 kilogrammes each of beans to victims in T/A Chiwalo in Malawi’s lower Shire district of Phalombe.

The donation worth K2 million (about $5 128) was received by Phalombe District Commissioner (DC) Atanazio Chibwana who later distributed the items to the beneficiaries due to the bad roads to reach the victims.

Making the donation, Optichem production manager Samuel Synoden said his company decided to donate after the traditional authority and district commissioner made a request.

“200 victims are likely to benefit from this donation. We hope that we will continue assisting such victims and others elsewhere,” said Synoden.

Chibwana said the district was thankful to the fertiliser making company, saying it had come at a time when most people needed it.

“The major problem as at now is that the roads to TA Chiwalo in Phalombe North East are very bad. Small cars cannot pass through except for big vehicles especially the 4x4s,” said Chibwana.

He said over 5 000 households were displaced by the floods; hence, the need for more assistance.
